Let’s play a game. In a single sentence, try to summarize the “meaning” behind each of these federal holidays:
New Year’s Day
Independence Day
Memorial Day
Pretty easy right? You could probably do this without looking anything up, since these holidays are so popular and obviously named. Maybe you gave answers like:
New Year’s Day: The first day of the new year
Independence Day: America’s birthday
Memorial Day: Honoring members of the military
But what about Labor Day? Why is labor worth celebrating? And what does Artificial Intelligence (AI) have to do with it?
According to the US Department of Labor: “Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers.”{{}}1{{}} But that’s so boring and sanitary that I am already asleep in the corporate bathroom where I’m hiding-out writing this.
Let me offer a shorter, alternative answer: On Labor Day, we celebrate the power of the working class.
Just to be clear, we’re not celebrating working at our crappy jobs. Far from it! We’re thanking the labor movement for its collective victories, including:
The 8-hour work day (instead of 10-hours){{}}2{{}}
The 5-day work week (instead of 6 days){{}}3{{}}
Laws restricting child labor{{}}4{{}}
Workman’s Compensation
Overtime Pay{{}}5{{}}
These concessions were hard-won by the unions and organizers who fought bloody battles for labor rights ever since the dawn of the industrial revolution. Only through the sustained pressure of millions of workers can we enjoy these benefits and more today.
In other words: the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
We have an annual holiday for one main reason: these concessions are not permanent, they are battle lines that are constantly fought, even today. All across the country, employers at all levels coerce, skirt the line, and intentionally confuse their employees for their own benefit. These skirmishes are part of a larger conflict called the “Class War” which pits employees against their bosses.
Did you know that you and your boss sit in opposite trenches on either side of the wire?
In war, an escalation can take many shapes. Clandestine efforts to destabilize an enemy region can expand into a blockade, aerial bombardment, and eventually a full-scale occupation.
The same thing is happening right now in the Class War. To the venture capitalists and accelerationist tech bros, AI represents the end of labor. Every new LLM is a mortar shell landing closer and closer to their target, and the shelling will not stop unless they run out of money.
Your boss dreams of eliminating the worker (you and I) from the economic equation. LLMs will produce all creative works, and robots will all replace manual labor. That’s the future your boss is dreaming of when they binge-read LinkedIn and Yahoo Finance. The only competitive advantage left will be access to capital, and those pesky employees won’t be around to clutter their balance sheets any longer.
NOTE: I am not a luddite, but all technologies have good and bad applications. I prefer Nuclear Powerplants to Nuclear Bombs. But tech corps aren’t selling the promise of Nuclear Power to the bosses of the world. They’re selling the nukes of the class war.
My point is this: you don’t just stand there when somebody starts shooting at you! In Nebraska, you fight back!
So many people today are content to pretend “it’s not a big deal” or “AI can’t replace me yet.” This application of technology is an existential threat to your ability to put food on the table. It’s time to grow-up and fucking act like it.
Time is not on our side. We must take stock of our resources, our skills, and most of all our allies. Which is exactly why Labor Day is important. It’s an opportunity to unify and organize.
Don’t spend labor day browsing door-buster sales, or Amazon, or getting drunk with your buddies watching sports, or getting a manicure, or taking your kids to the water park. THE RICHEST PEOPLE ON EARTH ARE TRYING TO TAKE YOUR MONEY AND YOUR POWER.
Spend your labor day finding allies. Unions and pro-labor groups like the DSA are fighting on the frontlines of the Class War, and need your support.
Support Local Labor Unions:
In Omaha, the Teamsters are fighting Premier Beverage.6 Union victories strengthen the whole working class.
Follow the instructions here for boycotts and letter drives.
Organize yourself:
Find other people in your area who understand the class war.
Ask them: “How can I make a difference?”
Educate yourself. Easy places to start:
Radicalize your friends:
Listen and encourage them to shit-talk their company.
Make memes that poke fun at their company.
Invite them to a DSA social or event.
